July 2020 WEF

Website to explore the availability and access to water, energy and food across the world.

The WEF (Water-Energy-Food) framework consists of a series of indicators used since 2011 to assess availability and access to resources, and their sustainable development at a global level. In this project, we collaborated with National Research Foundation, Water Research Commission, IHE Delft and the Government of the Netherlands

We designed and developed a website to facilitate the visual exploration and analysis of the WEF Nexus Index, as well as the indicators that make it up, the water, energy and food indicators.

Information and data are structured and presented gradually, from a panoramic world view to the detailed numbers for a particular country.

The website consists of three views:

  • Homepage with draggable 3D map to understand global trends

  • Benchmarking page to compare the indices across all countries

  • Country page with a detailed view of each country’s data

Challenges achieved

  • Innovative visualizations such as the 3D draggable world map and the comb chart
  • Search engine optimization, increasing the reach of the website
  • Custom icons to facilitate the understanding of the indicators
  • Mobile friendly , optimized for low bandwidth internet access
  • Downloadable PDF factsheet for each country
